Ah, Athens, Ga: a fertile oasis of urban gardens. Our sleepy little college town in a temperate climate zone has so many opportunities to put seed to soil: a backyard plot, planters on the front porch, an herb garden on your balcony. But what if you were stuck in an urban jungle, forced into apartment living and commuting to find green space. That’s the problem faced by Angelenos, where a spot in a community garden space has a 5-year waitlist.
The L.A. government has concocted a way to connect gardeners without a plot to spade in with homeowners willing to let strangers work their yards. A wonderful two bird/one stone situation, this initiative may also build community among these sprawled metropolitans.
