Methane capture likely at ACC landfill

At Thursday’s agenda setting session, the commission placed a proposal to build a methane capture facility at our Lexington Rd. landfill on the consent agenda for Feb 2, an action, according the ABH story, likely meaning it “will be approved unanimously.”

The story says Solid Waste funding is tight, even though the department nabbed 25 percent more recyclables in the CBD last fiscal year,  a growth that is likely due to educational and promotional efforts by the Recycling Division. But alas, due to a down construction economy, the landfill isn’t generating as much income – a problem that’s nationwide. The dump nabbed 60 percent less recyclables from haulers and citizens last year, according to the FY09 audit.

Added: As Manager Reddish said last night (I watched the video just now), generated funds from this methane project are much needed addition to the landfills enterprise funds, and if not from here, they’ll have to come from somewhere.

So bring on methane? Our neighbors over in Barrow County beat us to it, so why not.

Looks like this is a done deal. I wish I had made it to the meeting last night, but I didn’t read the agenda until it was too late.

Other landfill issues: only four-years left on the capacity, so expect expansion soon. The commission voted last year to seek permission to expand the dump from the EPD.  I’m as of yet unsure of where we stand right now, but I’ve heard from commissioners that the new cells have been permitted. Rumors of flouride flows into adjoining neighborhoods? We’ll see.
